Educational Philosophy

My educational philosophy has been greatly influenced by my childhood in Salinas California. My childhood was definitely not a paradise, nor did I have parents who spent hours working with me on my homework. However, they did instill in me a strong work ethic combined with an adventurous spirit. My childhood helped me to understand the underprivileged student, because I was that student. The adversities that they face, and the uncertainty of a future was my developing years were like, and because of that I understand not only the student that is living that life right now, but the parents that walk alongside them.

After many years of soul searching, I realized one indelible truth - I am an educator. I love teaching, I love making those connections with students, parents and teachers alike. My goal is to be able to help students and educators realize their full potential, to find their "Why" in the world, and to make it happen. My ambition is to create an experience that fosters a sense of wonder by bringing the inspirational aspects of the world into the classroom. I want people to want to be a part of our community, and I want people to "want" to learn.

When scholars are allowed to embark on adventure, they become engaged and committed learners. When a school can invite a child into an adventure, learning is not work; it becomes fun, despite its challenges. I learned through experience and self-realization that assignments should be created to give the scholar a sense of adventure. It may be more work for the educator, but it pays big dividends in the end. Scholars on a learning adventure will lean into the learning rather than be pulled into the learning by the educator.

Additionally, I have come to realize, as a parent and as an educator, that young people need to explore their uniqueness in the context of a safe and secure community. A sense of belonging occurs when an individual is respected and an appreciated member of a group. Children will naturally discover their own voice when they stand on a firm foundation of belonging. This comes from the type of community that I long to create. One that breeds a healthy sense of belonging that will evoke confident, creative self-expression, and one will that will give rise to beneficial members of our society.
