As part of my motivation to get scholars to understand that their world here, is part of a bigger world, my 2021-2022 class decided to help some veterans that were stationed overseas. We discussed about items that they would appreciate, and that were also essential. We got boxes, and then the scholars went about obtaining items, packaging the items and sending letters and care packages to three service members.  When the service members received the care packages, they hung our school lanyard at their "Oasis", which was fitting since our school's name was Desert Oasis Elementary School. When the service members returned to the states, they paid my class an impromptu visit and thanked my scholars for their time and generosity.

My scholars learned about human kindness, generosity and selflessness, and were able to honor our Veterans all at the same time. There truly is no better lesson than that which is learned by doing.
